Bridgehead to Launch Limited Edition of Boreal Blend

December 11, 2006 - Ottawa

Bridgehead officially launched today a new Limited Edition of Canadian Boreal Blend Coffee to help raise awareness about the Canadian Boreal region. The medium roast coffee - Boreal Blend - now available is a blend of Colombian, Nicaraguan, and Guatemalan coffees, three countries that provide winter shelter to Canada's Boreal songbirds.

"Research has consistently shown that the Boreal forest is a vital habitat for songbird populations," said Larry Innes, Acting Executive Director of the Canadian Boreal Initiative (CBI). "Up to 3 billion birds from over 300 bird species breed each year in the Boreal and we are very pleased that Bridgehead is offering its support to protect this Canadian treasure".

The Boreal Region represents over 25% of the world's remaining intact forests. It harbours an abundance of wildlife, vast freshwater resources, rich natural resources, and is home to abundant populations of wildlife including billions of migrating songbirds, and some of the largest caribou herds in the world. The Canadian Boreal is one of the last places left on earth that can maintain a fully functioning ecosystem capable of sustaining such abundance.

"Bridgehead strives to highlight socially and environmentally conscious issues for our consumers. We are excited to be able to promote the Canadian Boreal, an at-risk area in our own backyard, with this Limited Edition blend," explained Tracey Clark, Managing Director for Bridgehead.

Bridgehead was the first company in Canada to offer consumers fairly traded organic coffees and teas. It ensures that economic benefits remain where they are most needed: with growers, their families and communities and strives to be a positive demonstration of social and environmental sustainability for the Canadian coffee industry and beyond.

The Canadian Boreal Initiative (CBI) was created in response to both the opportunities and threats facing Canada's Boreal region. The CBI works with a wide range of conservation organizations, First Nations groups and governments to links science, policy and conservation activities in Canada's boreal forest.
