The Boreal Forest: Our Land, Our Story, Our Responsibility

National Aboriginal Speaking Series Event - An evening of stories and music celebrating the lives and leadership of Aboriginal people in Canada’s Boreal Forest

TORONTO: November 14, 2011 – Faced with increasing industrial development and land issues, Canada’s Boreal Forest needs solutions. Aboriginal leadership in conservation and land use planning is one of our strongest tools.

Prominent Aboriginal leaders will speak of their experiences living and working in the Boreal Forest:

John Cutfeet, spokesperson for Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation;
Stan Louttit, Grand Chief of Mushkegowuk and
Stephen Kakfwi, former Premier of the Northwest Territories and former President of the Dene Nation

will speak about the challenges and opportunities for Aboriginal peoples working to conserve and develop their boreal homelands.

WHEN:
Thursday, November 17, 2011 7:00-9:00 p.m. This free, public event will open with the performance of local Six Nations bluesman, Derek Miller. Light refreshments will be served.

U of T Faculty of Forestry and the Canadian Boreal Initiative. Invited guests also include senior government officials, Aboriginal and industry leaders, and representatives from conservation organizations.
