Aboriginal Speakers' Series

The Boreal Forest: Our Land, Our Stories, Our Responsibility.

A speakers' series about the Boreal Forest and the people who live there

Beyond housing wildlife, billions of migratory birds, millions of lakes and billions of tonnes of carbon, Canada’s vast Boreal Forest is home to more than 600 Aboriginal communities. The Canadian Boreal Initiative (CBI) has always put relationships at the front and centre of our work. Over the years, we have been privileged to hear many inspiring stories from our Aboriginal partners who call the boreal home. For millennia, Aboriginal peoples have been faithful stewards of their boreal homelands and their connections to the land, water, and wildlife are personal and powerful.

This year, we wanted to bring these stories to life for a wider audience through our first-ever Aboriginal Speaking Series. Through this tour, The Boreal: Our Home, Our Stories, Our Responsibility, we hope to capture the power of oral traditions, using personal stories to educate, inspire and engage Canadians about the importance and rich history of the Boreal Forest and the people who call it home.

Events so far have taken place at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, McGill University in Montreal, and the University of Toronto. We are planning events to come in places like northern British Columbia, Ottawa, and Quebec City, among others. If you have suggestions for speakers or locations, please contact us.
